The Drake women's soccer team soared past Illinois State, 1-0, on a last-minute goal Sunday morning in Normal, Ill., in an exhibition match that was quickly added to the schedule this weekend.
"We started the game a bit flat and couldn't match ISU's intensity and were too reactive. We did a good job of absorbing the first 15-20 minutes and finding our way into the game with high percentage passes and winnings more tackles," said head coach
Lindsey Horner. "We are really pleased with the experience we got a lot of our younger players today."
Illinois State maintained possession for more than half the match. Drake struggled to maintain possession but goalkeepers
Kelsie Stone and
Vianey Lopez faced a total of 17 shots and saved a combined 7 to keep the Redbirds from finding the net.
"Our goalkeepers played well and we will always celebrate a shutout but need to tidy up out defensive block and create better chances out of our counter prior to playing Kansas and Creighton," Horner said.
The last 40 seconds of the match allowed the Bulldogs to come out on top when senior
Tori Ubben took a free kick that was mishandled by Redbird goalie Daniela Grgas. The mishandle allowed freshman
Hallie Peak to come from behind the defender and tap the ball into the net, putting Drake on the board 1-0.
"We appreciate ISU for helping us pull this scrimmage together with next to no notice. Both teams got better from today's scrimmage and there weren't any injuries, so a successful outing," said Horner.
The Bulldogs remain on the road as they take on Kansas Thursday night in the regular season opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
