Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Drake Invite

Bulldogs win 14 matches to open up the 2021-22 season

The Drake University women's tennis team closed out competition at the Drake Invite Sunday afternoon with competitors in singles and doubles finals.

Following two days of bracketed competition, the Bulldogs had the doubles team of Millie Haagensen and Darinka Stepan competing in the finals of Flight 3 of doubles and Haagensen also in the final of singles Flight 2.

Unfortunately, Haagensen and Stepan were downed by Creighton's Siri Kongara and Emma Gener, 8-6.

Haagensen returned to the court in the afternoon for her singles final, but was clipped by Nebraska's Samantha Alicea in a thrilling match. Haagensen took the first set, 7-6 (7) but dropped the second, 6-1. Alicea then prevailed 12-10 in the tiebreaker to take the title.

On the weekend, the Bulldogs earned 14 wins to open their 2021-22 season. The team returns to competition in two weeks at the Gopher Invite, hosted by the University of Minnesota.
