DES MOINES, Iowa – Earlier this weekend, Drake women's tennis completed their 2022-23 fall schedule with a tournament title. The Bulldogs won their own Bulldog Invite after taking down Omaha, Milwaukee, and Creighton.
The Bulldogs earned their largest victory over the Mavericks of Omaha. In singles action,
Ines Stephani (6-2, 6-2),
Mille Haagensen (6-2, 6-1),
Darinka Stepan (6-0, 6-1), and
Rebecca Ehn (6-1, 6-4) all won in straight sets. Drake also swept the doubles action against Omaha with wins by Stephani/Ehn (8-5), Haagensen/Stepan (8-6), and Elizabete Klavinska/Oriana Parkins-Godwin (8-1).
Drake continued their dominance with a 4-3 win over Creighton. Stephani (6-4, 6-2), Stepan (6-3, 7-6), Ehn (6-4, 6-1) and Parkins-Godwin (6-3, 6-1) all notched singles wins. Klavinska and
Jyun-Yi Lee picked up Drake's lone doubles victory over the Bluejays by an 8-6 score.
Finally, Drake secured their undefeated weekend with another 4-3 triumph over Milwaukee. Stephani (6-3, 6-1), Haagensen (6-2, 6-1), Stepan (6-1, 6-4), and Klavinska (6-1, 6-0) all earned singles wins. The Panthers were able to sweep the doubles bouts but still dropped the dual altogether.
"I couldn't be more proud of the girls this weekend," Drake interim head coach
James McManus said. "In our final tournament of the fall season, they competed hard, stayed composed, and played great tennis. I was pleased with how they stayed aggressive during the big points."
Drake women's tennis will resume their 2022-23 campaign in February.
