CARBONDALE, ILL. – Graduate guard
Maddie Petersen broke both 1000 points and 500 assists on her career in the Bulldogs 65-73 loss to Southern Illinois Sunday afternoon.
The Salukis' owned the first half as the Bulldogs struggled to make a shot. Forward's Gabby Walker and Abby Brockmeyer each scored nine points for SIU in the first 20 minutes. Both also entered foul trouble late in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs came back from halftime with a fire inside them as they went on a 13-0 run to minimize SIU's 15 point lead to only two.
With 2:36 left in the third quarter, junior forward
Maggie Bair made a layup off a pass from Petersen. The assist was Petersen's second of the game and 500
th of her career.
Two minutes later, with 33 seconds left on the clock, Petersen made a layup to score her 1000
th career point.
Drake made one shot from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes. Petersen,
Grace Berg, and
Anna Miller were the only Bulldogs to make a three throughout the game.
The Bulldogs led in baskets made from the paint with 42 and free throw percentage.
Freshman guard
Katie Dinnebier scored 14 points and went 100 percent from the line after sinking all eight free throws she was awarded.
She also grabbed five rebounds for Drake.
Redshirt-junior forward Berg finished with 11 points, also shooting 100 percent from the line. She grabbed six rebounds.
Bair found herself in foul trouble in the fourth quarter and ended up fouling out with under two minutes to go. She finished with 10 points and led Drake with seven rebounds.
Walker led the Salukis with 18 points and 13 rebounds. She grabbed 11 rebounds in the first half alone.
Brockmeyer added 16 points for SIU and guard Makenzie Silvey added 18 points.
Drake remains on the road as they head to UNI on Saturday Feb. 19.
