Softball Leads Series with Bradley 2-0

Drake wins both games in day one of series.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake University softball team won the first two games of its series with Bradley Saturday afternoon. 

Drake 10, Bradley 2
The Braves took an early lead in the top of the first after Sam Smith singled to left field, allowing one to score and take the lead 1-0. 

The Bulldogs quickly responded in the bottom of the first when Emily Valtman slammed a ball to right field to put the Bulldogs on the board 1-1. Valtman's homer was her seventh this season. 

Macy Johnson, Libby Ryan, and MaKayla Rice all added a run in the bottom of the first to help Drake increase its lead to 4-1. 

Bradley scored one in the top of the third after an error by the Bulldogs, to make the score 4-2. 

The bottom of the fifth allowed for Drake to score five more runs to end the game in five innings. 

Valtman and Carey Koenig each recorded three RBI's in the first game of the day. 

Nicole Timmons started in the circle for Drake and recorded her fourth win this season. She added five strikeouts to her stat line.

Drake quickly took the lead in game two in the bottom of the first. Addie Lightner doubled to left field allowing Delaney Taylor to score, putting Drake up 1-0. 

MaKayla rice smacked a ball into right center to record her third career home run and give Drake a 2-0 lead. 

Freshman pitcher and Valley Newcomer of the Week Paige Bedsworth started in the circle for the Bulldogs in game two. She recorded three strikeouts in her fourth career win. 

Bradley managed to get on the board in the top of the third and fourth. 

Entering the bottom of the fourth, Drake held a 3-2 lead. Valtman doubled to left center field allowing Koenig to score. Johnson was next in the lineup and singled, allowing Valtman to advance to third and then score after an error by the Braves. Drake increased its lead to 5-2. 

The Bulldogs found Rice crossing home plate in the bottom of the sixth and held off Bradley in the top of the seventh to take home the win in game two. 

The Bulldogs return to Buel Field on Sunday to finish off their series with the Braves. First pitch is set for 12pm.
