NORMAL, Ill. – The Drake women's golf team started the 2022 fall campaign at the Redbird Invitational amidst dropping temperatures and rainy conditions on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Bulldogs navigated Illinois State's Weibring Golf Club (305-306-611) and are in seventh place out of 15 teams following day one.
"We had two great weeks of practice and qualifying," head coach
Steve Smith said. "I am very lucky to have eight amazing players to work with. It's so good to be back in tournament mode. The women did an excellent job competing today. They battled the elements all day and I'm very proud of all of them for their effort."
Kristen Giles (73-77-150) fired a team-low 73 in the opening round and is currently in a tie for 14
th place.
Amber Henson (79-75-154) and
Rylee Heryford (79-76-155) both made their collegiate debuts.
Abby Marting also turned in a two-round score of 155 with a 77 in the first round followed by a 78.
Aayushi Sarkar (76-82-158) rounded out the Bulldog lineup and
Kelly Kavanagh (89-85-174) competed as an individual.
The final round of the Redbird Invitational is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Monday (Sept. 12).
