Strong Debuts Boost Bulldogs on Day One at Wildcat Invitational

Cale Leonard turned in a solid debut while Drake men's golf teed off the fall season.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – After 36 holes on Colbert Hills Golf Course at the Wildcat Invitational, the Drake men's golf team currently sits in a three-way tie for eighth place after shooting a combined 597 on Monday, Sept. 12. 
 
Freshman Cale Leonard led Drake on the course with a team-low second round score of 73. Improving his second round from his first by one stroke, Leonard found himself tied for 25th place at the end of the day. 
 
Drake sophomore Jack Dumas' fall season got off to an impressive start after connecting five birdies on the front nine to help put him in a tie for fourth at two under (70) in the first round, before firing a 79 in the second round. Dumas put together a career-low first round at Colbert Hills and led the field in total birdies with eight. His front nine 33 (-3) in the first round was the best out of the field with a handful of players with 34 (-2). 
 
The second round was highlighted by the final three holes from Nick Pittman. Pittman nailed three birdies in a row to put him in a tie for 37th after shooting 150 after two rounds. He went two under from round one to round two. Four out of the five Bulldogs had better scores in the second round with three out of the five dropping their score by two or more strokes. 
 
Silvester Tan shot a two-round score of 154 as Shayne Patel rounded out the Bulldog lineup with a two-round total of 155.
 
The final round of the Wildcat Invitational will begin with a shotgun start on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 8:30 a.m.
 
THE REST OF THE FIELD
The Kansas State Wildcats dominated their home course with a 21-stroke lead after shooting 551 (-25) after 36 holes.
 
Kansas State had three out of its five players in the top four with Will Hopkins and Cooper Schultz on top of the leaderboard. Hopkins led all players with 12 birdies and a score of 136 (67-69). Hopkins shot a team-low 34 on the front nine with four birdies. North Dakota State sits in second place with a combined score of 572. 
 
NOTES
  • Jack Dumas' first round was a collegiate career-best with eight birdies and tournament-low 33 on the front nine.
