CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Kristen Giles fired a team-low third round on Tuesday, Feb. 21 as the Drake women's golf team closed out the Islander Classic in eighth place at Corpus Christi Country Club (par 72 | 6,112 yards) with a combined team score of 963.
"We did a great job being in the moment and not letting ourselves get too high or too low," head coach
Steve Smith said. "With the high winds and our first event of the spring, we did a good job of transferring from hitting golf balls to playing golf. I really liked our effort and we learned a lot in the past three days. Our second round missed the low round of the tournament by one shot. I'm very proud of all the players for their effort."
Giles (81-78-75-234) fired a 75 in the final round to move up to sixth overall.
Aayushi Sarkar (82-78-79-239) tied for 21st after a 79 over the remaining 18 holes.
Amber Henson (79-79-86-244) finished in a tie for 36th overall.
Rylee Heryford (90-79-81-250) and
Erika Holmberg (86-83-88-257) rounded out the Drake lineup.
Drake finished ahead of fellow Missouri Valley Conference members Southern Illinois (972) and Valparaiso (1025). Houston Christian rallied to win the Islander Classic with a combined score of 921.
The Bulldogs will return to Texas to compete at the UTRGV Invitational March 6-7.
