Brent Crews Added to Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

Crews brings even more prior head coaching experience to the bench and is coming off a three-year assistant coaching stop at Arkansas State.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake men's basketball head coach Darian DeVries announced the addition of Brent Crews to his staff as an assistant coach on Thursday, May 4.

"We are very excited to welcome Brent to our coaching staff," DeVries said. "He has an incredible amount of experience at various levels and will do an outstanding job with our guys on and off the floor. Just like everyone on our staff, he has a great passion for the game and will make a positive impact on the student-athletes in our program."

Crews arrives in Des Moines after three years as an assistant at Arkansas State. He was integral in the improvement of the Red Wolves defense.

"Coaching is unlocking a player's potential to maximize their growth," Crews said. "I am thrilled to be involved in a program that helps boys become men on and off the court. I am eager to learn under Coach DeVries' leadership and to be a part of a great school and community."

Prior to his stint in Jonesboro, Ark., Crews was the head coach for five seasons at Thomas University (NAIA) in Thomasville, Ga. During that stretch, Crews coached four All-Sun Conference players and seven Academic All-Sun Conference players.

Before leading the Night Hawks, Crews was on staff at the University of San Francisco for three seasons. In 2012-13, he was initially the video coordinator for the Dons, but was promoted to assistant coach midway through the season.

Crews served as an assistant coach at Chipola College during the 2011-12 season before heading west. He also headed up the Florida Elite and Florida Family AAU teams from 2008-2011 and served as an individual trainer from 2007-2011.

A two-year letterwinner at Florida Atlantic, Crews played 57 career games for the Owls from 2005-07. As a junior, Crews started 26 of 27 games and led the team in assists (133), steals (43) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.66). He also set a program record for best turnover-to-assist ratio in Atlantic Sun Conference games at 5.4. As a senior, Crews dished out 140 assists from his point guard position and was named the FAU's best defensive player.

Crews began his collegiate career at Chipola College where he helped claim consecutive state and NJCAA Region VIII championships. The team combined for a 65-9 record and finished ranked in the Top 10 nationally in his two seasons (2003-05).

A native of Chipley, Fla., Crews earned his degree in social science from Florida Atlantic in 2007. Crews will be joined in Des Moines by his wife Andrea, and their two children, Jaden (15) and Jax (9).
