DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake hosted the Bulldog Classic this past weekend, where the team faced competition from Creighton, Nebraska, North Dakota and Iowa State, and won six matches across two days of play in the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
Jessica Popiol highlighted the weekend with four singles wins. On Friday, she took down Annika Elvestrom from Creighton in a tight three-set match. She lost the opener 5-7 but evened the match after a dominant 6-1 second-set victory, before icing the match with a 10-5 third-set win. Popiol continued her winning play into Friday, winning three matches in straight sets. She defeated Nebraska's Yuzu Miyoshi 6-4, 7-6 (6); North Dakota's Linn Svaerd 6-4, 6-3 and North Dakota's Aziza Aubin 7-5, 6-4.
As a team on Friday, the Bulldogs won three of six matches. Popiol's singles win accounted for one of the victories, with a
Laura Koralnik and
Elizabete Klavinska 7-6 (3) doubles victory over Nebraska opponents and a Popiol and Klavinska 7-5 doubles win over North Dakota opponents rounding out the day.
Popiol accounted for all three Bulldog wins on Saturday in her singles dominance. The only defeat on Saturday was a Popiol and Klavinska loss against Iowa State opponents.
