Rome, GA - Ben Johnson and
Christian Winstead wrapped up play in the ITA Conference Masters Championships this week, where they represented the Summit League. They lost both of their matches against competition from across the nation.
"Ben and Christian represented Drake well," said Head Coach
Justin Stuckey. "I thought we had opportunities in both matches to have a different outcome since we had leads at one point in both matches. This is something to build on for the spring season as start to prepare for that."
Play began on Thursday, Nov. 7, and Johnson and Winstead competed against Jack Davison and Brogan Pierce from Western Michigan, representing the MAC conference. The Drake duo dropped the match in straight sets, losing 6-3 and 6-4. The loss pushed Johnson and Winstead to the consolation bracket.
On Friday, Nov. 8 the Bulldogs resumed action against Davis Wiley and Cole Brashear from Richmond and the A-10 conference. Johnson and Winstead dominated the first set 6-0, jumping out to an early lead. Wiley and Brashear came storming back with their own 6-0 set victory to even the contest. Wiley and Brashear carried the momentum into the tiebreaker set, winning 10-4 and ending Johnson and Winstead's tournament.
