TULSA, Okla. – The Drake University softball team (8-6) went 1-1 for the second time in as many days during their trip to Oklahoma. The Bulldogs began the day with another defeat of Kansas City before getting tripped in Saturday's finale vs. Tulsa.
Drake 7, Kansas City 4
Both teams played through three scoreless innings before Drake was able to strike first. The Bulldogs scratched across four runs in the fourth inning, starting with a Tulsa fielding error that scored both
Destiny Lewis and
Abby Martin.
Frankie Rita then doubled to left to bring
Molly Hoekstra home. A
Carey Koenig sacrifice fly brought Rice back around to punctuate the inning.
Drake later added to their tally in the sixth inning when Rice scored on another error by the Roos, one of six official mistakes by Kansas City.
The Roos did their best to mount a comeback, eventually trimming Drake's lead to just one run after scoring four of their own in the sixth frame. The Bulldogs managed to escape without any more damage and added two more insurance runs in the last inning on a Lewis solo shot homer and a Koenig double.
Drake went on to win 7-4.
Frankie Rita had the best game of her young Drake career with three hits in four at bats and an RBI. Both Lewis and Rice went 2-for-4 while the latter led the team with three runs driven in.
Molly Hoekstra improved to 2-0 in the circle this season after pitching 5.1 innings and allowing just one earned run and a walk.
Emma Richards came on late to earn the save after throwing a solid 1.2 innings.
Tulsa 11, Drake 3
The Bulldogs seemed to be starting right where they left off in the final game of the day against Tulsa. Koenig delivered the game's first blow with a one-run home run in the top of the first. The Golden hurricane answered with a run of their own to knot the score.
Drake retook the lead in the second stanza as Koenig continued to swing a hot bat. The Dogs' leadoff hitter spanked a single to left to bring
Allie Bishoff home before
Emma Dighton went yard. Drake held on to a 3-1 lead after an inning and a half.
Tulsa proceeded to take over in the fourth inning. The Golden Hurricane's next four runs came via long shot including a three-run bomb off the bat of Imani Edwards. Tulsa's hot streak kept going through the fifth and sixth innings as the hosts eventually enabled the mercy rule to win 11-3.
Koenig and Dighton each logged two base hits to lead Drake in the Saturday finale. Koenig also drove in two runs. Dighton took the loss in the circle to fall to 2-3 overall.
Drake will conclude their OSU/Tulsa Invite schedule tomorrow morning with a battle against Seattle. The Bulldogs and Redhawks will start play at 9:30 a.m. in Stillwater, Okla.
