DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women's tennis team improved to 2-1 in its last three matches with a 7-0 shutout of UNI (3-10, 0-2). The Bulldogs (6-9, 2-1) controlled the day from the first serve in their first home match in almost a month.
Every match counted for a point on Friday, and the Bulldogs won them all. The Bulldogs' win came in front of a great home crowd including area youth tennis atheltes from Roosevelt High School. Drake's domination started in doubles play as the duos of
Ines Stephani/
Mille Haagensen and
Rebecca Ehn/
Darinka Stepan won handily.
All five singles bouts were over in two sets. Stephani defeated Adrijana Brkic in the No. 1 position in what proved to be the closest contest at 6-4, 7-5. Haagensen and Ehn also needed some additional points to close out their matches but did their part in the shutout.
Stepan and
Nicole Lee, the No. 4 and 5 players for Drake, looked very solid in two more match triumphs as Drake cruised to the 7-0 win. Friday's result marked the sixth straight Bulldog win over UNI.
"It was great to be back home after a couple weeks on the road," Drake head coach
Breaunna Addison said. "I'm glad we were able to get the job done tonight. I thought the team competed well and took care of business. We're looking forward to another tough road swing next weekend. Big thank you to the fans that came out, especially the team from Roosevelt."
Drake will hit the road for its final two matches away from Des Moines in the regular season. The Bulldogs will visit Missouri State on Apr. 6 before traveling to Murray State on Apr. 7.
