DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake softball team got back into the win column with consistent offensive production in a convincing 9-3 victory against Bradley at Ron Buel Field on Sunday, April 21.
Bradley (23-23, 12-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play) scored first in every game of the series with two runs in the top of the first inning on Sunday afternoon. Batting second in the lineup,
Carey Koenig pulled the ball over the left field wall for her third home run of the season, a solo shot to cut the early deficit in half, 2-1, after one inning of play.
In the bottom of the second,
Destiny Lewis smacked her second home run in as many days (team-best sixth homer of the season) with a two-run blast to left field, which propelled the Bulldogs in front by a score of 3-2.
Drake (19-21, 7-10) wasn't done yet as the home team put up a six spot in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
MaKayla Rice crossed home plate on a passed ball, the same passed ball that moved both
Emma Dighton and Koenig into scoring position before
Addie Lightner drove them home on a single to right center.
Frankie Rita contributed to the run total and her 3-for-3 day at the plate with an infield single that scored
Skylar Rigby for a 7-2 Bulldog advantage. Lewis capped off Drake's fifth-inning rally with a two-run double the other way to right field as she collected her second straight game with four RBI.
The Braves responded with a run in the top of the sixth, but that was all the visitors from Peoria could muster as
Molly Hoekstra (10-5) went the distance allowing two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
