WAVERLY, Iowa- The Drake University men's and women's track and field programs saw both teams working together for a strong showing at the Outdoor Select on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 5-6, The meet was hosted by Wartburg College at Walston-Hoover Stadium and featured a different field compared to last week's Wartburg Good Friday Challenge.
Overall, the men's team placed fourth out of ten teams with 93 points and the hosts from Wartburg finished in first with 184 points.
Junior Justin Cunningham (10.66) placed first in the men's 100m dash after crushing the prelims with a meet-best performance. Sophomore Hayden Cross (48.81) also ran well with a bronze placing in the 400m dash.
Sophomore Aidan Simon (1:54.83) joined the weekends' top Bulldogs with a gold medal finish in the 800m dash with junior Aziz
Jdai (9:12.42) joining him in the gold position in the 3,000m steeplechase.
Freshman Cooper Cerese (15.57m) managed to sweep his competition in the shot put while junior Anthony Barmes (71.07m) performed well in the hammer throw to represent the Bulldogs in the field events.
On the women's side, the Bulldogs also placed fourth out of 13 teams with 87 points. Wartburg also won the women's competition.
Junior Briandrias Rhodes (12.16) rocked the 100m dash with a first-place finish while also taking the gold (25.13) in the
200m dash.
Juniors Emilie Meyer (2:14.33) and Amanda Radava (2:17.50) took first and third respectfully in the 800m dash.
Freshman Lara Smits (12.56m) placed third in the shot put and first (43.79m) in the discus to represent the women's team in the field. Centaine
Noom-Duckworth (59.82m) and sophomore
Chinemerem Iwuagwu (53.51m) placed first and third, respectively, in the hammer throw.
The team will compete again from April 11-13 in Azusa, Calif., at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
