DES MOINES, Iowa – Former Drake University cross country and track and field team member Pur Biel will participate in a conversation regarding his current work with the Refugee Olympic Team and international refugee athletics.
 
Biel, a refugee from South Sudan who settled in Kenya's Kakuma camp and discovered a passion for running, competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics as a member of the Refugee Olympic Team. His Drake tenure began in 2021 after transferring from Iowa Central Community College. Biel was a consistent contributor to the Bulldog XC/TF programs.
 
He graduated from Drake in 2023 and is now a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and IOC member while focusing on the well-being of displaced athletes. Biel aims to provide access to sport for one million young refugees this year.
 
"Pur was a catalyst for success in our program," Drake cross country and track and field coach Jay Koloseus said. "He is a natural leader and help set much of the successful culture we now experience, however his footprint was much more impactful than just athletic results. We were able to witness firsthand the value of hard work and self-belief because of Pur and his story. He has shown all of Drake University that, regardless of life's hardships, everyone is capable of achieving their dreams."
 
Biel closed his collegiate career in 2023 with a top three finish at the Dutch Invitational in the 800m run (1:54.87). He also ran a 6k time of 20:24.80 in the cross country season opener at the Oz Memorial and broke the 25-minute barrier for his 8k personal best at the Bradley Pink Classic. His XC experience ended at the 2022 NCAA Midwest Regional with a 10k time of 31:44.30.
