CLERMONT, Fla. – The Drake women's golf team wrapped up competition in its second event of the spring on Tuesday afternoon and took home a fifth-place finish at the Rust Buster Match Play at King's Ridge Country Club in Clermont, Fla.
The Bulldogs began the event on Monday and faced Toledo in the first round. Drake narrowly fell to the Rockets, 3-2, to put it in the consolation bracket.
Amber Henson and
Erika Holmberg earned the full two points for the Bulldogs besting their counterparts with scores of 3&2 and 2&1, respectively. Both Henson and Holmberg held the lead for most of their matches with Henson growing her lead to as much as 5up.
In the second round, Drake battled against in-state rival and fellow Missouri Valley Conference member, UNI. The Bulldogs came away with the victory over the Panthers with a score of 3.5-2.5.
Julie Huggins and
Kate Connolly cruised to match wins with victories of 5up and 6up. Holmberg won her second match of the day to give the Bulldogs another full point and
Alexis Reyes halved her match to give Drake the edge over UNI.
Drake went up against Akron in the consolation match and prevailed with another 3.5-2.5 victory. Henson, Reyes, and Connolly all delivered with wins while Holmberg provided the half point by halving her match.
The Bulldogs will have some time off before their next competition at the West Texas Classic hosted by Abilene Christian University, March 3-4.
