DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake women's tennis ended their winless start to the 2025 spring season with a 4-3 victory over Marquette on Friday night. The Bulldogs began the night by earning the doubles point before clawing through singles action to take the W.
Marquette's team of Tiera Jarmond and Andie Weise were their only bright spots during doubles as that duo won in the top spot, but Drake took the other two contests to earn the tally.
Jessica Popiol and
Shiori Takeda, two true freshmen, defeated Emma Davis and Elena Duva of Marquette in the No. 2 position while
Nicole Lee and
Jana Ruzic made quick work of Joelle Fiallo Schad and Luciana Mendoza at No. 3. The Bulldogs.
It was Popiol and Takeda's second doubles win of the year and Drake's first doubles point as a team this spring.
The match moved into singles play with the Golden Eagles scavenging for a comeback. Jarmond eventually beat
Elizabete Klavinska at No. 1 while Davis and Fiallo Schad followed suit for Marquette.
The Bulldogs leaned on their youth, though, as Takeda was masterful in a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Mendoza at No. 3 and Ruzic swept Duva in straight sets in the sixth spot. Popiol came up big again for the Bulldogs with the eventual match-sealing win at the No. 2 slot. She upended Andie Weise 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to secure Drake's first match victory of the year.
Drake will return to action on Thursday, March 13 when the Bulldogs host Omaha. That matchup will be back in Des Moines at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center starting at 6 p.m.
