WAVERLY, Iowa – Drake track and field traveled to Waverly for the Wartburg Outdoor Select meet on the campus of Division III power Wartburg College. The Bulldogs produced four individual winners and several other top six finishers over the 2-day event.
The distance duet of
Brendan Cain and
Ethan Vargas posted individual titles in the men's 3000 and men's 5000, respectively. Cain won his event in 9:24.49 while Vargas ran his race in 15:25.06. Men's throwers
Adam Phillips and
Ethan Elliott also won in the field events. Phillips topped the hammer throw roster with a toss of 60.15m/197'-4" while Elliott threw the shot put 17.28m/56'-8.5".
Savannah Ming was a 2-time runner-up with a 12.15 100m dash and the lead-off leg of Drake's 48.36 women's 4x100 relay.
Briandrias Rhodes,
Denae McElrath, and
Zofia Landowska rounded out that second place relay team. Newcomer
Bowen Martin earned third in the mens' 5000 (15:41.71) while
Drake Dombrosky's 50.07 400 was also third. The Dogs' top five finishes on the track were rounded out by
Anastasia Kirillov's 1500 (4:40.31) and Emmaline Nau's effort in the 100m hurdles (15.41)
Lara Smits had a trio of top six placements to highlight the remainder of the field events. Smits collected two runner-up spots in the discus (45.72m/150') and shot put (14.45m/47'-5") along with a personal best sixth place result in the hammer throw (48.56m/159'-4").
Cooper Cerese added another second-place finish in the men's shot with a heave of 16.77m/55'-0.25".
Sam Carpenter added a bronze in the men's hammer with a throw of 57.86m/189'-10".
Christopher Norris' 52.91m/173'-07" javelin launch and
Chinemerem Iwuagwu's 55.09m/180'-9" hammer throw both earned fourth.
The Bulldogs will be sticking around in Des Moines next weekend for the Jim Duncan Invitational on Friday, April 11.
