DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake women's tennis suffered from another spell of déjà vu on Friday night as the Bulldogs fell to Creighton, 4-3. The final tally marked the fourth time in as many matches that Drake was beaten by that margin.
The Bluejays took control of the match early on with wins by the pairings of Sophie Schwartz/Ana Paula Martinez and Teresa Tran/Mithila Dixit to secure the doubles point.
Drake was able to fight back once singles play started as
Jana Ruzic (No. 4) and
Shiori Takeda (No. 3) earned wins by 6-0, 6-3 and 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, respectively. A pair of Creighton wins at the fifth and sixth spots preceded a
Maja Dodik victory at the No. 1 position that drew Drake even again at 3-3 overall.
Creighton's Martinez and Drake's
Kristina Tai went back-and-forth with the match hanging in the balance. Martinez was able to claw out a 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 result to secure the 4-3 victory for the Bluejays.
Drake will be back in action at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center on Sunday when the Roos of Kansas City visit Des Moines. The Bulldogs and Roos will get things going at 11:30 a.m.
