INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Drake track and field finished the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships with a handful of top finishers including two gold medal winners.
Adam Phillips took first place in the men's weight throw with a toss of 22.03m/72-3 1/2.
Chinemerem Iwuagwu mirrored that effort with a victory in the women's weight throw after heaving 19.97m/65-6 1/4.
Sam Carpenter followed Phillips in the men's weight throw with a throw of 21.46m/70-5 to earn runner-up status.
On the track,
Brenden Heitzig made the podium with a third-place finish in the men's 5,000. Heitzig crossed the line in 14:13.02.
Anastasia Kirillov posted another top five finish in the women's 5,000, running a 16:57.76.
Finally, Drake put together two relay teams that finished inside the top six of their respective races.
Breanna Burak, Emmaline Nau,
Ella Brown, and
Kayci Martensen combined for an 11:57.43 in the women's distance medley, good enough for fourth.
Juan Trasobares,
Dylan DeAngelo,
Xander Kwa, and
Carter Beasley competed together on the men's distance medley team to earn sixth after finishing in 10:03.16.
The MVC Indoor Championships will conclude tomorrow, March 2, in Indianapolis.
