PEORIA, Ariz. – The Drake men's golf team finished its time at the Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate on Tuesday and ended in 15th out of 17 teams with a total score of 894 (297-302-305).
Marquette claimed the team title with an 843 (282-282-279) final score as it held off a third-round charge from Iowa State who tallied a runner up finish at 847 (285-281-281).
"It was a disappointing performance for us," Drake head coach
Matt Lewis said. "We did a nice job making a good amount of birdies, but the main thing that hurt us was we had too many big numbers. We had the most doubles or more relative to the field. This is the first time we have had this problem. It is definitely something we will talk about and will need to focus on going forward."
Freshman
Luke Bohmer had the best finish individually for the Bulldogs and tied for 41st. Bohmer posted rounds of 72-78-70 for a total score of 220. Bohmer's final round of 2-under, 70 was the only round under par for the Bulldogs during the tournament.
"Luke had a great final round to lead us with a two-under par, 70," Lewis said.
Nate Spear and
Jake Weissenburger were next in line for Drake on the leaderboard. Spear tied for 55th, while Weissenburger tied for 65th. Spear tallied a total score of 223 with rounds of 74-73-76 and Weissenburger carded a 225 total with scores of 78-75-72 making improvements with each round.
Finishing up the rest of Bulldog lineup was
Sam Johnson and
Chase Pickering. Johnson tied for 73rd with his total score of 227 (74-76-77) and Pickering tied for 88th at 233 (77-78-78).
"The team battled extremely hot conditions with afternoon temperatures as high as 107," Lewis added. "It was physically draining with the warm weather, but all teams had to deal with it."
Individual medalist honors went to Maryland's Emil Riegger, who ended his tournament at 10-under, 206.
Drake will be back on the course for its next tournament, the Tiger Intercollegiate, hosted by Missouri from the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia Mo., April 6-7.
