NEW YORK Drake senior forward Matt Nickell (Waukee) has been drafted in the first round by the D.C. United of Major League Soccer in the MLS Supplemental Draft.
Forty-eight players were selected in the four-round Supplemental Draft, allowing MLS clubs to continue to add to their rosters, which this year have been expanded to incorporate an all-time high of 28 players (18 Senior Roster players and 10 Developmental Roster players).
Nickell, the 12th overall pick, led the Bulldogs with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points last season. He ended his Drake career tying the school record for career assists (22), ranking second in career goals (31), career points (84) and career shots (215).
This is just an awesome opportunity, said Nickell. Ever since you start playing as a youngster, you want to reach the highest level. Its an honor to know that someone wants to use a draft pick on you.
Nickell joins former Drake standout Ezra Hendrickson on the D.C. United roster. Hendrickson, the Bulldogs only All-American in mens soccer, is Drakes all-time scoring leader with 43 goals, 95 points and 248 shots. Also on the D.C. United roster is soccer phenom Freddy Adu, the youngest player in MLS history.
