GREEN BAY, WIS. ? The Drake women's soccer team got on the winning track in a big way Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win over host Green Bay. Six different Bulldogs players were in on the scoring.
“Today we created chances and were able to capitalize on those and get the ball into the back of the net,” said Drake assistant coach
Lindsey Horner. “We had some younger players make the most of their opportunity.”
Senior
Sinead Brown (Toronto, Ontario) scored Drake's first goal in the 9th minute (8:17) on a one timer from seniors
Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) and
Lauren Hoguta (Thornton, Colo.).
Thaden scored a goal of her own in the 32nd minute (31:12) from 30 yards out with an assist from sophomore
Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo).
Townley scored Drake's third goal in the 39th minute (38:50) after dribbling through the midfield and taking a 15-yard blast unassisted.
“As a team we were able to overcome a long road trip and play well. We worked through unusually hot playing conditions and minimized their physicality. It is great to get another shutout as we head into conference play,” added Horner.
Bulldogs senior
Sarah Foote (Arvada, Colo.) scored her third goal in as many games to cap off the Drake scoring attack in the 76th minute (75:40) on a feed from sophomore
Melissa Lewis (Edina, Minn.). Foote sent a shot through the Phoenix defense from eight yards out.
“It was good to get our third win going into conference. It is going to be a big boost for morale. It is good for me personally to be back on track. I had it rough early and it feels like I am headed in the right direction,” commented Foote.
The Bulldogs peppered Green Bay goalkeeper Brooke Wikgren with 12 shots on goal. Drake outshot the Phoenix, 24-12.
Brown led the Bulldogs attack taking six shots. Lewis added five shots with three on goal for the Bulldogs effort.
Drake, which moved to 3-6-2, enters Missouri Valley Conference play on Thursday as they host Creighton at the Cownie Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
