DES MOINES, IOWA ? The Drake men's soccer team (9-4-4, 2-1-2) pushed No. 8 Creighton (9-1-5, 3-0-2) to the limit Saturday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex to earn a 1-1 double-overtime tie.
“Sometimes a tie feels like a win and sometimes it feels like a loss but tonight was such a pulsating match that perhaps it was a just result,” said Drake head coach
Sean Holmes. “But when we rattled the bar twice and had them on their heels, I thought for sure we had the win.”
Freshman
Matt Kuhn (Raytown, Mo.) scored the Bulldogs goal in the 67th minute (66:49) on a pass from sophomore
Garrett Webb (Prairie Village, Kan.) inside the box in traffic. “
Matt Kuhn must surely be the conference freshman of the year,” said Holmes.
Thomas Gjoesund scored the Bluejays goal in the 19th minute (18:27) off a free kick from Andrei Gotsmanov.
Drake outshot the Bluejays 12-7. Bulldogs senior
Keith Gorczyca (Overland Park, Kan.) and freshman
Matt Kuhn (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) each had a shot deflect off the cross bar, with either one giving Drake the win. Gorczyca and Foster along with senior
Luke Frieberg (Cumming, Iowa) each had two shots to lead the Bulldogs.
“Tonight's game demonstrated that we are capable of playing with the elite programs in the country. The dynamic flowing attacking nature of our team is exciting for the players, the fans and the coaches,” added Holmes. “If college soccer is to grow we need to entertain and play a positive soccer.”
Senior
Phillip Breuer (Port Washington, Wis.) came up with four saves in goal for the Bulldogs. His counterpart Matt Allen had seven saves for the Bluejays.
Prior to the night's contest the Bulldogs honored six of their seniors who will be graduating next year.
Phillip Breuer,
Luke Frieberg,
Keith Gorczyca,
Justin Howell,
Kurt Larson and
Matt Meszaros were honored along with Kirk Emick, the team's athletic trainer and
Ryan Moylan who will return next year for his fifth season.
“Tonight was a terrific senior night in that four of our seniors were outstanding in their final home game.
Phillip Breuer,
Luke Frieberg,
Keith Gorczyca and
Kurt Larson (Olathe, Kan.) were the backbone of our defense. Saying goodbye to players is always tough but they have really set the standard on both on the field and in the classroom," added Holmes.
“I think it is easy to get caught up in the extravaganza that is college athletics today but these are 18-21 year old young men who tomorrow will be in the library at the computers, or in the lab preparing for the challenges that lie beyond collegiate life.”
Drake will play its final regular season contest Saturday when they travel to Missouri State for a 7 p.m. match with the Bears.
