PEORIA, ILL. - Drake senior Nicole Braunsdorf (St. Francis, Wis.) finished second in the Bradley Classic women's cross country meet Friday at the Newman Golf Course.

Braunsdorf covered the 6,000-meter race in 21 minutes 26 seconds, being clipped at the finish by Northern Iowa's Caedryn Schrunk who won in 21:24.

"Nicole really ran an outstanding race," said Drake cross country coach Dan Hostager. "She had the lead until the final 100 meters."

With the Missouri Valley Conference Championships looming in the horizon, Hostager felt his squad had a good performance to build on.

"Nicole made a bold move move midway through the race and that is the type of effort she will need in the conference meet," Hostager added. "This was a good test heading into the MVC meet. We got some great efforts that will pay off in two weeks"

Drake finished fourth in the 15-team field, scoring 136 points while placing ahead of MVC schools Illinois State (ninth) and Bradley (12th).

Drake sophomore Casey McDermott (Newton Iowa) placed eighth in 21:53, while sophomore Meredith Bell (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was 33rd in 22:44.

Drake junior Courtney Heinz (St. Paul, Minn.) was 36th in 22:47, while Elizabeth Dunn (Framingham, Mass.) was 59th (23:14); sophomore Katie Coomer (Overland Park, Kan.) 76th (23:38); senior Emma Barker (St. Paul, Minn.), 91st (24:11); and senior Kristin Looney (Evergreen Park, Ill.), 95th (24:18).

The Bulldogs will return to action in the MVC Championships Nov. 1 in Springfield, Mo., with the women's final slated for a 10:30 a.m. start.
