ORLANDO, FLA. ? The Drake softball team's seventh inning threat fell short as host Central Florida earned a 2-1 victory in the Bulldogs final game at the UCF Tournament Sunday.
Senior
Susan Slycord (West Des Moines, Iowa) led off the seven frame off with a single through the left side, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Marilyn Buss (West Des Moines, Iowa). Sophomore
Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) then singled up the middle, and stole second. Senior
Kristin Birocci (Des Moines, Iowa) was forced into a ground out to end the inning, stranding Slycord and Leon in scoring position.
The Knights scored both of their runs in the second inning on fielding errors. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Megan Murphy tallied the first run on a miscue by Leon. Cat Snapp reached after being hit by a pitch and scored on an error by third baseman
Erin Bly (Frankfort, Ill.).
The Bulldogs scored in the top of the third inning when Leon singled-home Slycord. Leon led the Bulldogs at the plate with two hits and an RBI.
Drake out-hit Central Florida, 4-3, but stranded seven runners on base. The Knights stranded eight.
The Bulldogs continue their tournament tour at the Demarini/Wilson Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. next weekend opening action against Brigham Young at 11 a.m. Friday.
