TEMPE, ARIZ. ? Brigham Young downed the Drake softball team, 2-1, in the opening game of the Wilson/Demarini Invitational, Friday.
Senior
Jaci Faidley (Colfax, Iowa) two-out single in the fourth inning, driving in
Kristin Birocci (Des Moines, Iowa) for the Bulldogs' lone tally and brought Drake within one run of the Cougars, 2-1.
Drake got two runners on in the fifth and seventh innings, but was unable to plate the equalizer.
Brigham Young took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Kristin Delahoussaye stole home before Caschjen Davis doubled home Stephanie Platt Hopkins.
Freshman pitcher
Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) held the Cougars to six hits, while striking out eight batters.
Faidley along with
Marilyn Buss (West Des Moines, Iowa),
Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) and
Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) each notched a hit in Drake's four-hit performance.
The Bulldogs continue action at the Wilson/Demarini Invitational facing tournament host No. 2 Arizona State at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
