TEMPE, ARIZ. ? The No. 2 softball team in the nation, Arizona State, lived up to its reputation as it scored 10 runs over three innings to down the Drake softball team, 10-0 at the Wilson/Demarini Invitational on Friday.
The Bulldogs best scoring opportunity came in the fifth inning, as
Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) singled through the left side, notching the first hit for Drake, before
Kristin Birocci (Des Moines, Iowa) sent a shot down the right field line.
The bases were loaded when
Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines, Iowa) was walked, but the Sun Devils were able to retire the side before any damage could be done.
Freshman
Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) led off the seventh inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) was walked with two outs, but a pop out ended the Bulldogs threat.
Arizona State's Krista Donnenworth notched the Sun Devils first three runs in the first inning when she hit a three-run home run to left-center field.
The Sun Devils went on to score three runs in the third frame and four runs in the seventh, while out-hitting Drake, 12-3.
Drake continues action at the Wilson/Demarini Invitational facing off against San Jose State at 10 a.m. Saturday before playing Florida International at noon.
