DES MOINES, IOWA ? Senior Kristin Birroci (Des Moines, Iowa) hit a 10th inning game ending single to lift the Drake softball team to a 1-0 victory past Bradley Saturday. Birocci also hit a walk-off home run in the fifth to end the second game 12-3 as the Bulldogs swept a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader
The Bulldogs improved to 20-19 including a 10-5 MVC slate, Birocci had with a combined three hits and four RBI in the doubleheader.
Drake had a difficult time in game one, notching only five hits. The Bulldogs had a scoring opportunity in the seventh inning when Birocci and senior
Jaci Faidley (Colfax, Iowa) walked but were stranded on a line drive out.
Freshman pitcher
Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) held the Braves to five hits while striking out five batters. Dordel notched her sixth complete-game shutout improving her record to 14-5.
Senior
Marilyn Buss (West Des Moines, Iowa) led off the first inning of the second game for Drake with a solo home run to left center.
The Bulldogs went on a tear in the second inning, scoring six runs. Buss got things rolling when she singled up the middle scoring
Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty, Iowa) and
Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa). Buss then scored on an error by Bradley third baseman Lauren Meister.
Sophomore
Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) capped the six-run frame when she drove in Mollohan and Faidley on a three-run shot over the left field wall.
Drake capped things off in the fifth when freshman
Erin Bly (Frankfort, Ill.) homered to left field, scoring Leon. Freshman
Molly McClelland (West Des Moines, Iowa) singled through the left side. Buss doubled the next at bat before Birocci's home run ended the game.
Buss went 3-4 in game two with three RBI and three runs scored. Leon went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman pitcher
Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) earned the win for the Bulldogs, improving her record to 4-6 on the season while striking out four batters.
Drake completes its three game MVC series with Bradley at 12 p.m. Sunday before hosting Iowa at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
