DES MOINES, IOWA ? After three hours and eleven minutes of playing time, Drake sophomore
Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines, Iowa) hit a shot at Iowa second baseman Chelsey Carmody who turned and fired the ball into left field allowing sophomore
Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) to plate the winning run as the Bulldog softball team, beat No. 25 Iowa, 4-3, in 12 inning Tuesday night.
It marked the second top 25 team the Bulldogs have knocked off this season. On Feb. 22, Drake beat No. 12 Michigan, 2-0, at the Central Florida Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
Drake scored the tying run in the seventh frame on a
Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty, Iowa) two-out single, which scored
Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa).
The Hawkeyes had ample opportunity to win the game, stranding 13 runners on base to the Bulldogs five.
Drake freshman pitcher
Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) showed great resolve in the tenth inning when she threw out Iowa shortstop Erin Riemersma at home to keep the Bulldogs in the game in the tenth frame.
DeLong improved her record to 5-6 on the season, while giving up one hit in three innings in relief of starter
Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.). Dordel pitched nine innings, striking out six batters while allowing three runs on eight hits.
Iowa kept Drake at bay by turning in two double plays.
Drake took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when senior
Kristin Birocci singled home Hatfield down the left field line. Senior
Jaci Faidley (Colfax, Iowa) drove in senior
Marilyn Buss (West Des Moines, Iowa) on a single up the middle, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage.
Drake held the Hawkeyes to only one hit in extra innings, a single in the 12th by Summer Downs.
Kahler led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-4 with one RBI.
The Bulldogs, who improved their record to 22-19, travel to Creighton for a 4 p.m. single game Wednesday before traveling to Illinois State this weekend.
