CEDAR FALLS, IOWA -- The Drake softball team completed its three-game Missouri Valley Conference sweep over Northern Iowa by powering back with six runs in the final innings to erase a 10-5 deficit en route to claiming a 11-10 win Sunday.
Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) saved the day for the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh by hitting a one-out two-run home run over the left field fence, giving Drake its first lead of the day, 11-10.
Drake improved its record to 17-16 with an 8-4 MVC ledger, overtaking its 2007 win total (16).
The Panthers opened the game with six runs in the first two innings before senior
Jaci Faidley (Colfax, Iowa) doubled through the left side to drive in
Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines, Iowa) sparking the Bulldogs' five-run third inning.
Freshman
Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) followed Faidley's shot with a three-run home run.
Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) hit her own home run the next at bat, a solo shot to left field to pull the Bulldogs within one run, 6-5.
After giving up four unanswered runs to UNI in the fourth, Mollohan doubled-home Faidley to kick off a three run fifth inning, bringing the Bulldogs within two runs, 10-8.
Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) singled to drive in
Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa) before
Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) got caught in a run down which plated Leon capping the three run frame.
Marilyn Buss (West Des Moines, Iowa) singled home
Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty, Iowa) in the sixth inning to move the Bulldogs within one run of Northern Iowa, 10-9.
Mollohan stepped up big for the Bulldogs notching a career high three hits and her first multiple RBI game (4).
The Bulldogs out hit the Panthers, 14-11,while committing one error.
DeLong earned the win in the circle for Drake, pitching 3.2 innings, while giving up only one hit and striking out seven batters.
Drake returns to action with a doubleheader at Iowa State at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
