DES MOINES, IOWA - Led by two titles from freshman Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George School), the Drake women's tennis team claimed four titles in the final day of the Drake Fall Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 28).
Aguilera collected a singles crown in the “B” draw after dispatching of Northern Iowa's Laia Gonzalez-Garrido, 6-1, 6-0. She later teamed with fellow freshman Morgan Rainey (Kansas City, Mo./Barstow School) to register an 8-3 doubles triumph against Lauren Mastro and Kelsey Schmidt of Creighton in the “B” finale.
Senior Sarah Plowman (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Hallifax Grammar) came up shy in her bid to win the “C” singles draw dropping a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 verdict to Northern Iowa's Diana Mendez.
In the “C” consolation bracket, freshman Earlynn Lauer (Wichita, Kan./Goddard) downed Jordan Short of Central Arkansas in the title match, 6-2, 6-1.
Capping the victory parade was the tandem of freshmen Gabby Demos (Chesterfield, Mo./Lafayette) and Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins), who recorded an 8-5 decision in the “A” doubles flight over senior teammates Plowman and Veronika Leszayova (Povazska Bystrica, Republic/Gymnazium).
The Bulldogs return to action in two weeks as Drake hosts the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Individuals (Oct. 10-12).
