MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.. -- The Drake softball team improved to 3-0 with a 4-3 victory over Western Illinois at the Metrodome Classic in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on Saturday (Feb. 14).
Sophomore pitcher
Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn. /Chaska) collected her first win of the season, going the distance for the Bulldogs. Dordel threw a three-hitter, while collecting 10 strikeouts and walking one in six innings.
Trailing 3-0, Drake answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The inning started with a walk by
Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) who advanced to second off a
Molly McClelland (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) single to right field.
Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene) was called out on a sacrifice, advancing Mollohan and McClelland to second and third, respectively. Junior
Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty, Iowa/Clear Creek-Amana) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Mollohan.
After Kahler stole second and
Mandy Osborn (Blair, Neb./Blair) walked,
Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines, Iowa/East) doubled to left center, scoring McClelland and Kahler.
Junior
Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Hatfield to third. The final run of the inning was off a double steal by Leon and Hatfield.
McClelland led Drake with two hits while
Erin Bly (Frankfort, Ill.), DeLong and Hatfield each collected one hit for the Bulldogs.
