DES MOINES, IOWA - The Drake softball team scored four runs
in the second inning en route to a 6-0 win over visiting Iowa State Thursday at
Buel Field. Originally scheduled as a double header, the Bulldogs and Cyclones
played only one game due to cold temperatures.
Sophomore Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho (Coeur d'Alene)
collected her 10th win of the season, allowing only three
hits and striking out four over four innings for Drake, which improves to 19-14
and 4-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Bulldogs had eight hits in the contest, led by juniors Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley)
and Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty,
Iowa/Clear Creek-Amana) with two hits apiece. Leon added three RBI and Kahler
added two RBI and scored two runs.
DeLong started things in the second inning with a single
down the right field line and advanced to second on a Molly McClelland (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) sacrifice bunt. Junior Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines,
Iowa/East) then doubled to left field, scoring DeLong and Kahler followed with a single to right center that
scored Hatfield. Leon finished the scoring, hitting her 10th double
of the season to left center, scoring Kahler and freshman Rose Magaddino (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro), who had reached on a
walk.
The Bulldogs added one run in the fourth and one in the
sixth.
Drake hosts Indiana State Saturday (April 4) and Sunday
(April 5) in an MVC match-up. The double header scheduled for Saturday and the
single game scheduled for Sunday both begin at 12 p.m.
