IOWA CITY, IOWA -- The Drake softball team executed a successful squeeze play in the sixth inning for a, 1-0, upset of No. 25 Iowa Wednesday.
Drake was held to three hits, including two from sophomore Erin Bly (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East). Junior Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley)
had one hit and collected the game's only RBI.
Sophomore Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene)
won her 18th game of the season, allowing three hits and striking out eight over seven innings.
Junior Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines, Iowa/East) reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher to start the sixth inning. Hatfield was sacrificed to second by Kelsey Kahler and advanced to third on a passed ball. Leon then reached base on a fielder's choice to third base, scoring Hatfield.
Iowa had two runners on in the seventh inning with one out before DeLong struck out the final two batters of the game, securing the win for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs, who
improve to 29-20 (12-8 MVC), close the regular season hosting Northern
Iowa Saturday and Sunday (May 2 and 3) at noon.
