Softball Tops Arkansas, 2-1, Falls to Iowa, 3-2

MINNEAPOLS, MINN. – The Drake University softball team split its Saturday contests, with a 2-1 early victory over Arkansas and a 3-2 nightcap loss to Iowa. Junior pitcher Jenna DeLong tossed seven strong innings and struck out nine to earn her first victory of the season.

DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) allowed a single run on four hits and a pair of walks and faced just two over the minimum through five shutout innings. The junior allowed a leadoff home run to Arkansas's Jessica Bachkora in the top of the sixth to spoil the shutout, but sat down the Razorbacks in order in the seventh to preserve the 2-1 victory and improve her record to 1-1 on the season.

Sophomore Torrey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.) paced the offense with two hits and drove in both runs from the four hole of the lineup. Craddock gave DeLong an early lead with an RBI single through the right side that scored senior Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa) and put the score at 1-0 after one inning. Junior Erin Bly (Frankfort, Ill.) scored Drake's second run in the sixth when Craddock slapped an RBI double to left field.

After a win to open the day, the Bulldogs fell to Iowa, 3-2, in the nightcap after the Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Drake led 2-1 going into the seventh after a two-run fifth care of a Bly sacrifice fly and a Craddock RBI double. Iowa's Katie Brown homered to open the inning and tie the contest at two. Jenny Schulke singled and was sacrificed over twice before Johnnie Dowling scored her with an RBI single through the right side to end the game.

Junior Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) took the loss for Drake after allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks in 6.2 innings of work. Iowa stranded 10 baserunners before the seventh inning. Dordel falls to 1-1 on the season.

Drake finishes the 2010 Metrodome Softball Classic Sunday with an 11 a.m. rematch against Iowa.
