DENTON, TEXAS -
With a leadoff home run in the day's first game, Drake University softball senior
Elena Leon tied Katie Shimon's all-time school home run mark of 25, set in 2004.
The shot set the tone for the rest of the day, as Drake went on to a 2-0 victory
against Sam Houston State and earned an 8-1 win over Colorado State during day
two of the Sleep Inn Classic in Denton, Texas.
Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) also tied Drake's all-time
walks record with a fourth-inning free pass against Colorado State. The walk
was the 80th of Leon's career, tying Susan
Slycord's mark set in 2008.
Bulldog pitcher Jenna
DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho), powered Drake to its first win of the day,
a 2-0 victory over Sam Houston State, with a complete-game, five-hit, 14
strikeout effort. Her strikeout total tied a career high, set in 10 innings
against Northern Iowa May 3, 2009 and set a career-high for a seven inning
appearance. The win moved her record to
3-2 overall.
Leon and sophomore Erin
Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.), provided all the run support DeLong needed;
Leon with the aforementioned leadoff home run, and Mollohan with a solo homer
in the fourth inning.
Mollohan drove in two in Drake's 8-1 victory over
Colorado State later in the day, but it was freshman Lindsey Vande Wall (Prairie City, Iowa) who made the biggest
offensive splash in game two. Vande Wall deposited Ram pitcher Kelly Eubanks' bases
loaded offering over the right field fence for a fourth inning grand slam,
breaking a 1-1 tie and sparking a five-run inning.
Junior pitcher Brynne
Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) tossed six scoreless innings after allowing an
unearned run in the first. The junior allowed five hits and struck out eight while
walking two to move her record to 3-1 on the season.
The pair of wins put Drake at 6-3 overall. The Bulldogs
meet Arkansas Sunday at 11:30 a.m. to close out the Sleep Inn Classic.
