CLEARWATER, FLA.
-- With a fifth-inning, two-run homer, Drake senior infielder Elena Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa)
broke the school's all-time home run mark and helped the Bulldogs to a 4-0
softball victory over Boston College Saturday at the USF Under Armour
Invitational. Drake dropped a 6-5 decision to Pittsburgh to close its Saturday
schedule.
The shot was the 26th of Leon's career, breaking Katie Shimon's previous career mark of 25.
Leon's homer doubled Drake's two-run cushion to four in
the fifth inning against Boston College.
Leon went one-for-two and scored two runs in Drake's 6-5
loss to Pittsburgh. The Panthers scored six unearned runs in the second and
staved off a patient Drake rally that spanned three separate innings but came
up one run short in the end. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the first, one in
the third off a solo home run by Freshman Lindsey Vande Wall (Prairie City,
Iowa), and two more in sixth on a two-run double by senior Erin Bly (Frankfort,
Ill.).
Vande Wall's homer was her
third of the season
Junior pitcher Brynne Dordel
(Chanhassen, Minn.) took the hard-luck loss after allowing all six unearned
runs along with five hits and four walks over five innings of work. Junior
Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) entered in the sixth and struck out the
side after allowing a leadoff walk. Dordel's record stands at 5-3 on the
season.
The Bulldogs meet New Mexico
State and Long Island, Sunday. Game times are 10:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
central, respectively.
