LINCOLN, NEB. - The
Drake University softball team split a doubleheader with Nebraska,
Tuesday,
winning an eight-inning thriller, 4-2, in the opener and dropping a 5-0
contest
in the nightcap.
The Bulldogs ended Nebraska pitcher Robin
Mackin's no-hit
bid with two outs in the top of the seventh inning when Junior Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) drove
a first-pitch offering over the left field fence for a two-run home run.
The
shot, Mollohan's third of the season, tied the score at two and sent the
game
into extra innings.
Senior Elena Leon
(West Des Moines, Iowa) led off the eighth with a walk and scored on a Lindsey Vande Wall (Prairie City, Iowa)
double to put the Bulldogs up one to start the extra frame. Junior Erin
Bly (Frankfort, Ill.) drove in Vande Wall to give Drake a 4-2
advantage
heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Junior pitcher Jenna
DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) took it from there, striking out the
side in
the bottom half of the eighth and final inning to give Drake a 4-2
victory.
DeLong pitched all eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six
hits
while striking out 12 and walking four to move her record to a team-best
10-3
overall.
The Bulldog offense managed just two hits off
Cornhusker
hurler Ashley Hagemann in a 5-0 loss in
the nightcap. Leon opened the game with a single while Mollohan stroked a
second-inning double to account for Drake's offensive output during the
game.
Junior Brynne
Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) was saddled with the loss after allowing
four
runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks in four innings of work.
Senior Mandy Osborn (Blair, Neb.) tossed the
final two innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out two.
Dordel's
record moved to 9-4 overall.
The doubleheader split put Drake's record at
19-8
overall.
