FAYETTEVILLE, ARK.
- The Drake University softball team dropped the first game of its Saturday
doubleheader at the Razorback Invitational, 2-1, to Iowa State. The loss
snapped a six-game winning streak for the Bulldogs.
Drake and junior pitcher Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen,
Minn.) trailed 1-0 after a second-inning bunt single by Cyclone Amanda
Bradberry scored Alex Johnson. Dordel settled in after that, throwing four shutout
innings to keep Drake within one.
The Bulldog offense managed four hits through the first
six innings and was held scoreless by ISU pitcher Tori Torrescano. Drake pushed
across its lone run with back-to-back seventh-inning doubles by seniors Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines, Iowa) and Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty, Iowa). Kahler's
RBI double scored freshman Lindsey Vande Wall (Prairie City, Iowa), who entered
the game as a pinch runner for Hatfield, and tied the game at one each entering
the last of the seventh.
Dordel allowed the inning's first two runners to reach
and left the game in favor of senior Mandy Osborn (Blair, Neb.) with no outs.
Osborn recorded two outs before ceding the game-winning hit to ISU's Carleigh
Berry. The loss dropped Osborn to 0-1 on the season.
The loss put Drake at 8-4 on the season. The Bulldogs
wrap up their Saturday slate with tourney host Arkansas Saturday night.
