DES MOINES, IOWA -
The Drake University softball team dropped a 6-1 Missouri Valley
Conference
decision to Wichita State Saturday at Buel Field. The Shockers scored
five runs
in the top of the first and held the Drake offense to just three hits on
the
day.
Junior pitcher Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) didn't make it out of the first
inning in
her second start of the series. DeLong allowed five Shocker runs to
cross the
plate before leaving the game in favor of Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) with two outs in the frame.
Dordel threw the remaining 6.1 innings and
allowed one
run on four hits while striking out three.
Senior Elena Leon
(West Des Moines, Iowa) led off the bottom of the first with her 30th
career
home run, but the Drake offense was held in check by WSU pitcher Kasha
Kolb,
who went the distance for her sixth win of the season.
Senior Bridget Shields tallied the other two Bulldog hits with a 2-for-2 effort at
the
plate.
Drake fell to 20-10 on the season and 3-3 in the
MVC.
The Drake players wore purple jerseys, which
were auctioned
off following the game. Proceeds from the jersey auction will go to the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The Bulldogs travel to Ames, Iowa to meet Iowa
State
Tuesday, April 6. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
