AMES, IOWA -
The Drake University softball team topped Iowa State, 3-2, Tuesday, earning its
first victory over the Cyclones in three tries this season. Seniors Elena Leon
and Molly McClelland provided the offensive pop for the Bulldogs, hitting a
pair of home runs and driving in all three runs in the victory.
McClelland (West Des Moines, Iowa) plated the first run
of the game with a solo shot to left center in the top of the third. The homer
was her fifth of the season and put Drake up 1-0 early.
The Cyclones knotted the game at one in the following
half-inning on an RBI groundout, but junior pitcher Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen,
Minn.) held Iowa State to one run on two hits over the final four innings.
Leon (West Des Moines, Iowa) slammed her eighth home run
of the season in the sixth to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.
Dordel finished what she started, going the distance for
her team-best 11th victory of the season. She allowed two runs on five hits
while striking out three.
The Bulldogs improved to 21-10 overall. Drake and Iowa
State will meet at Buel Field, Thursday at 4 p.m.
