Men's Cross Country Team Wraps Up Regular Season With Bradley Classic

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

What's Ahead: The Drake men's cross country team, after its fourth team title of the season, will head to Peoria, Ill., to compete in the Bradley Classic on Friday. The 8,000-meter race at the Newman Golf Course will start at 5 p.m. This marks the final meet before the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championship on Oct. 30 in Terre Haute, Ind.

Last Time Out: Fueled by three top-five performances, the Bulldogs won the Walt Disney Cross Country Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., on Oct. 8.

The Bulldogs, battling wet conditions for the first time this fall campaign, earned 31 points to win the team title.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was sophomore Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa), who ran the 8,000-meter course in 25:13.86 to earn second-place. Fellow sophomore Omet Kak (Des Moines, Iowa) was fourth in 25:33.10, while senior Colin Hagan (Wichita, Kan.) finished fifth with a time of 25:42.98.

Senior Ben Jaskowiak (Madison, Wis.) had a ninth-place outing completing the course in 26:13.17, while junior Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) was 11th in 26:17.85.

A Year Ago: Returning to competition after a two-week layoff, a young Drake squad finished seventh in the 21-team Bradley Classic at the Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill., on Oct. 15, 2010.

Omet Kak led the Bulldogs by placing 14th overall out of 211 runners. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes 42 seconds. DePaul's Matthew Graham won the meet in 23:37.

Brogan Austin, a former three-time Iowa prep state champion, was 22nd in 24:51.

Ben Jaskowiak was 55th in 25:30, while Tim Cornish placed 57th in 25:35.

Charlie Lapham was 66th in 25:40, while then-freshman Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.) was 68th in 25:43.

Drake Ranked 12th In USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Poll: The Drake men's cross country team remains 12th in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Midwest Region poll released on Oct. 3.

The Bulldogs began the year ranked 12th before rising to ninth after their Oz Memorial team title in early September.

The next regional poll conducted by the USTFCCCA will be released next Monday (Oct. 17).

Up Next: Drake will compete against conference foes at the State Farm MVC Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 30. The 8,000-meter race will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
