AMES, Iowa -
Freshman Jordan Gronewold turned in
her best day as a Bulldog, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI, but
couldn't lead the Drake University softball team to victory Thursday at Iowa
State. The Bulldogs fell, 8-6, to the Cyclones on a walk-off grand slam by Iowa
State infielder Tori Torrescano
Down, 6-3, in the bottom of the seventh, the Cyclones
loaded the bases against Drake hurler Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.). After plating a single run, Torrescano stepped
to the plate to end it with the grand slam.
Dordel took the loss, falling to 10-9 on the season after
throwing 2.2 innings and allowing six earned runs on seven hits.
Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) pitched the initial 3.2
innings and drove in five of Drake's six runs with two homers, her fifth and
sixth of the season. Her effort broke a personal 1-for-16 slump over the last
five games and resulted in the second multi-homer game of her career. Gronewold
delivered the other April 2 against Evansville and is the only Drake player to
have a multi-homer game this season.
The freshman allowed two runs on six hits and left the
game with the lead.
With Nicole Randel
(Alpine, Calif.) aboard in the second, sophomore Lindsey Vande Wall (Prairie City, Iowa) dropped a bunt single to put two on for Gronewold. The freshman cleared the bases with her first
slam of the game and gave Drake a 3-0 lead after two.
Gronewold delivered her second shot, a two-run homer, in
the fourth to give Drake a 5-0 lead.
Senior Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) slammed her eighth home run of the season in
the sixth for Drake's final tally.
The Bulldogs return to Missouri Valley Conference play
Saturday with a doubleheader against UNI at Ron Buel Field. First pitch is
scheduled for 12 p.m.
