COLUMBIA, Mo.-
In her first 3,000-meter steeplechase of the season, senior Casey McDermott (Newton, Iowa) took
home the event crown at the Tom Botts Invitational on Friday (April 8).
McDermott, the
school record-holder in the event, ran the race in 11:00.57, which was almost
30 seconds faster than Scotti Schoen of Northern Iowa, who finished in
second-place.
"Casey competed
very well in winning the steeplechase," said Drake
assistant track coach Dan Hostager.
"It's an event that she really hasn't worked on much in the past two years but
she picked up very well despite it being such a grueling event."
Freshman Celia Venezia (Labadie, Mo.), in her
first collegiate steeplechase, was fifth, clocking in at 12:35.01.
Senior Johanna Sprang (New Brighton, Minn.)
soared 10 feet 9.75 inches to finish eighth in the pole vault.
Senior Cambria Pardner (Aurora, Colo.) placed 13th
in the long jump leaping 16 feet 1.75 inches.
The Drake
women's track team will return to Audrey J. Walton
Stadium tomorrow (April 9) to wrap up the Tom Botts Invitational. Action is
slated to start at 10 a.m.
