Masibhera Wins Drake’s First Triple Jump Title At The Drake Relays

Bulldogs close out a successful Drake Relays with a title Sunday

DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake University's Cloud Masibhera became the first Drake man to win the triple jump at the Drake Relays as he bested the field Saturday afternoon at the Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom.

With his third jump, Masibhera put a mark of 48-1.75 (14.67m) on the board that held up over the last three rounds to earn him the white flag. On his fifth jump, he also hit 48 feet before passing on his final attempt with his title already secured. His title is the 30th individual Relays title by a Bulldog and first since 2017.

Air Force's LaShawn Harris finished second in 47-6.25 (14.48m) as the competitors enjoyed a healthy tailwind throughout the competition.

History was also made by the Bulldogs in the men's hammer throw as Joey Harkins continued his assault on the record book by becoming just the second Bulldog to ever throw farther than 200 feet in the event. He came into Saturday ranked second all-time in Drake history and improved that standing with a throw of 200-10 (61.21m) to finish fifth in the event. His throw came on his second attempt of the competition.

Katelyn Williams finished 12th in the women's hammer throw with her second best toss of the season at 177-8 (54.17m). 

In the lone individual event on the track for the Bulldogs on the day, Ryan Schweizer finished fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.72. His performance ranks 10th all time in Drake history.

The day closed in impressive fashion as well as the women's 4x400-meter relay of Ellie Mendlik, Busiwa Asinga, Briandrias Rhodes, Yinka Mary Ajayi won the unseeded heat in 3:45.30, the fifth-fastest time in school history.

The men's team of Victor Peka, David Olowookere, Joseph Kruse, Aobakwe Malau finished second in their unseeded event in 3:15.19

The end of competition at the 111th Drake Relays marked one of the most successful Drake Relays for the Bulldogs in recent history with a Relays title and eight top-5 finishes by the Bulldogs.
