TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Drake Bulldogs (9-14, 2-0 MVC) swept the Saturday doubleheader against the Indiana State Sycamores (11-9, 0-2 MVC) to open 2012 Missouri Valley Conference play. Drake won 5-1 in game one and 4-2 in game two against the Sycamores.
In game one, Drake sophomore Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on two hits to improve to 7-10. Gronewold struck out eight batters with just two walks and she drove in one run at the plate.
Freshman Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) continues to put up impressive numbers in her first season as a Bulldog. Playing third base in game one, she went 2-4 with a home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) added a two-RBI triple in the seventh inning to put the game away for the Bulldogs.
In game two, the Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 in the third inning when the Sycamores plated two off of Gronewold on a pair of hits.
Trailing 2-0 going into the sixth inning, the Bulldogs bat's came alive with four runs to storm in front and pick up the win. Pierce hit an RBI triple and Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.) added an RBI single. Pierce and Craddock each finished 2-4 in the game with one run scored and one RBI.
Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) came on in relief for Gronewold in the fifth inning and the freshman pitched three scoreless innings to earn her second win of the season (2-5).
