By any measure, the 2011-12 season represented a major step forward for the Drake men's basketball team under head coach Mark Phelps, in his fourth season. Here's a look at the major accomplishments, both team and individual, from the season.
HONORS AND AWARDS
- Junior Ben Simons and sophomore Rayvonte Rice earned second-team All-MVC and NABC All-District 16 honors.
- Simons was captain of the Most-Improved Team and earned his first MVC Player of the Week honor for games of Jan. 9-15, 2012.
- Senior Kurt Alexander earned a place on the All-Bench Team.
- Junior Jordan Clarke earned second-team MVC Scholar-Athlete honors.
TEAM NOTES
- Drake qualified for a postseason tournament for the third time in the last five seasons (2008 NCAA, 2009 CIT), and second in the four-year tenure of head coach Mark Phelps. The March 14 first-round CIT win over North Dakota was Drake's first in the postseason since 1975.
- This year's 18 wins were the most in Mark Phelps' four-year tenure as head coach and tied for ninth-most in school history. Drake posted a winning record for the second time in Phelps' four years (17-16, 2008-09), making him the first Drake head coach in 50 years to post two winning seasons in his first four (Maury John, 2, 1958-62).
- Drake played 34 games in 2011-12, most in a season in school history (33 in 2007-08, '08-'09 and '09-10).
- With 62 career wins, Phelps has more wins than any Drake coach in his first four seasons (2nd: Maury John, 55, 1958-62). No Drake head coach since Maury John (.555 from 1958-62) has had a better winning percentage in his first four seasons than Phelps (.473).
- Drake's third-place finish (9-9, tied with four teams) in the Missouri Valley Conference was its second-highest in the MVC standings in the last 26 years. The 2007-08 Bulldogs won the conference title at 15-3, and the 1985-86 team tied for second at 10-6. This year's 9-9 MVC record was the best under head coach Mark Phelps, and is topped in the last 26 years only by the 15-3 mark of '07-'08, and matched by the 9-9 finishes of 2001-02, '94-'95 and '92-'93.
- Drake ranked No. 1 in the MVC in three-point field-goal pct. defense (.305) and third in steals (6.9).
- Drake was 16-2 when shooting a higher percentage than its opponent and 9-0 when shooting 50 percent or higher.
- The Bulldogs did not allow an opponent to shoot higher than 50 percent from the field for an 18-game stretch before Rice shot 53.1% in the season-ending CIT Tournament loss. Opponents in that stretch shot a combined 41.2 percent (408-991), including a figure of 39.6 percent over the last nine games (199-of-503). In addition, those nine opponents combined to shoot 49-of-217 (.226) from three-point range.
- That 18-game stretch followed a period in which Drake allowed six opponents over an 11-game span to top 50-percent shooting before tightening up on the defensive end.
- Drake finished the season with 213 three-pointers, fifth-most in a season in school history, exceeding last season's figure total of 203. Five of the top six seasons for three-pointers made have come in the last five years, four of them under head coach Mark Phelps (2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th).
