AMES,
Iowa - The Drake Bulldogs dropped a close game to the Iowa State
Cyclones, 1-0 on Wednesday night at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Ames.
Back to back doubles in the fourth inning by Lexi Slater
and Erica Miller off of Rebekah Schmidt
(Cottage Grove, Minn.) put the Cyclones on the board for the only run of the
game.
Schmidt pitched three innings and allowed three hits and
one run. The freshman walked three and struck out two. Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) started for Drake (13-15, 6-0 MVC) and struck out
two and walked one in three innings.
Taylor Smith tossed a shutout for Iowa State (10-18, 0-3 Big 12) to earn the
win and she allowed just three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
The Bulldogs stranded one runner at second base in the
first inning and another at third base in the second inning. Both times the
batter hit the ball well but right at an ISU fielder to end the inning. Drake
also had a runner on second in both the third and sixth inning but was unable
to push a run across.
Amy
Pierce (Olathe, Kan.), Torey
Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.) and Lindsey
Vande Wall (Prairie City, Iowa) each had one hit for Drake.
The loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Bulldogs.
Drake will return to MVC play when they host the Missouri
State Bears this Saturday in a doubleheader at Ron Buel Field. First pitch is set for noon.
